You are cordially invited to the salon at ChâteauVillage on Tuesday, February 28 at 6:30 pm for a discussion with Nicholas Dungan on Why France Matters, the subject of his next book.

President Nicolas Sarkozy has just declared his candidacy for re-election against the Socialist front runner François Hollande in what promises to be a hard-fought presidential election in two rounds on April 22 and May 6. Thereafter the campaigns for the legislative elections to the National Assembly will begin, with voting expected on June 10 and 17.

With France and its elections at center-stage, there could not be a better time to remind ourselves Why France Matters. France was instrumental in giving birth to the United States – with ideals from the Enlightenment, as well as money, troops and heroes such as Lafayette – so as America and Europe seek to define their roles in a globalized world, can the United States benefit by turning toward France again?

The relevance of France goes well beyond its traditional image. France stands up to analysis as an exemplary, forward-looking country in terms of society, business, politics and international relations. So why would one need to justify Why France Matters — the question is well worth asking and is open to debate.

Nicholas Dungan is a senior fellow of the Atlantic Council in Washington DC and the Institut de relations internationales et stratégiques in Paris, a member of the boards of directors of the Chatham bHouse Foundation, Science Po Alumni and the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce New York Chapter, and author of Gallatin, America’s Swiss Founding Father, published by NYU Press in 2010.

He was president of the French-American Foundation in New York from 2005 to 2008 and is a frequent media commentator on international relations, politics, business and finance. An investment banker in his prior career, Dungan is a graduate of St. Paul’s School, Stanford University, and Sciences Po Paris.
